Studying & exchange programs in the USA
From full-time study and language courses to Work & Travel: F-1, J-1 and M-1 – properly prepared with the right documents.
Anyone wanting to study or join an exchange program in the USA needs a student or exchange visa. Which one fits depends on the program and institution: F-1 for academic study and language courses, J-1 for exchange and sponsor programs (e.g. au pair, Work & Travel, research), M-1 for vocational, non-academic training. The basis is always an approved US institution or recognised sponsor.

Yes. Without an I-20 (F/M) from the school or a DS-2019 (J) from the sponsor, the visa cannot be applied for. These documents are the basis of the application.
Limited. F-1 students may work on-campus and, to a limited extent, via CPT/OPT. The rules are strict – clarifying them in advance is advisable.
